Strengthening

Changemakers.

Lulu Ota | 2025

Climate change is one of the most critical issues the world is facing, and my work in design joins the movement to solve it.

Design is a powerful tool of communication, empathy, and storytelling—and it is currently underutilised by the graphic design industry for positive social change.

Each of the projects featured in this portfolio are results of in-depth research and strategy, 1:1 collaboration with leaders in New Zealand, and a detailed design process spanning months. The projects bring together technical and practical knowledge with fresh, passionate creativity.

Dylan Chand, Founder of The Climate Action Conference.

“When we first approached Cultigraphy, The Climate Action Conference was merely just a concept. It was their exceptional guidance and thorough branding strategies that helped shape our vision and made the conference the success that it was. Our attendees, facilitators, and sponsors all loved the collateral Cultigraphy provided us with and helped to bring in audience of 300 people for the conference. Cultigraphy goes above and beyond the usual design company and the quality of service is incomparable. I highly recommend ALL businesses, organisations and non-profits to engage in Cultigraphy's services, they will never leave you disappointed!”

Linzie Meager, Maker of Linzie Smith Jewellery

“A truly brilliant branding experience. The dedicated and thorough research into the specifics of my brand and where it fits in the current retail landscape was really impressive and set the tone for the rest of the process. Every aspect of the design work is impeccable and fully captured the specific identity of the brand that I was hoping for. The considered approach, attention to detail, stunning design skills and eagerness to dig deep in to each necessary aspect of my business identity has left me feeling so confident in launching my business.”

Works In Progress

The current projects I am working on range from website design & development to packaging. I take care to foster genuine, long-term partnerships with my clients and am happy to be collaborating with all my older clients into 2024. I am also involved in New Zealand’s climate activism community and developing a suite of techniques for my design practice to become environmentally-positive.

Regenerative Architecture

Regenerative Architecture

My thesis, completing a MArch(Prof)UrbPlan(Prof), is named Recover, Regenerate, Rehabilitate: Inhabiting Flood Ecosystems.

This thesis explores and imagines an interdisciplinary solution that taps into the potential of regenerative design and policy, in order to address climate-induced flooding issues—which arose with force, in January 2023, into Auckland’s public understanding. The research investigates and articulates, via cartographic visualisation, the techniques of regenerative architecture and blue-green infrastructure that can be harnessed into an “Ecosystem” of architectural design, masterplanning, and regulation.

The research and design proposal discovers that the foundational principle to reduce flooding in urban environments is slowing & reducing stormwater runoff volume. This principle can be actioned through a suite of nature-based solutions, connecting wetlands and green spaces into a living network that bridges the public (urban) and private (architectural) realms, supported by policy interventions to facilitate the effective implementation of the network.
